On my system, turning Java off didn't help.
Turning off anti-aliasing in [View] made flipping between tabs on
spreadsheet instantaneous. Wow.
fyi: The default process manager in Windows is Task Manager, but many
replace it with Microsoft/Sysinternals Process Explorer.

You can find out more simply several ways including by using
free -m
on the command-line in Linux and possibly Mac. Windows has some sort
of process manager that used to be accessed through Ctrl Alt Del
(while crossing your fingers and hoping it didn't just reboot the
machine). One of the tabs in there showed how much Ram was being used
(and how much free). In Linux you can sometimes find what process are
hogging resources by typing in
top
- and then Ctrl C to escape before you get too hooked.
