I've tried Gimp -
          I wasn't able to figure it out, so went back to Irfanview -
       which may or may not be better, I don't know; as to simpler ...
well,
       I prefer the KIS method  ;-)

Hi :)
I tend to edit pictures with an image editor such as Gimp so that the image
can then be used anywhere and everywhere else easily too.  Imagine cropping
the image exactly right in Writer/Word and then having to do the cropping
all over again for Facebook.  So i edit once and then can use that
everywhere.
