Shakespeare has letters and scrolls (written
documents, as here) telling things as well as bells and clocks doing so:

And G. K. Chesterton opines "A good novel tells

tells us the truth about its author."
Will you dig up these authors and reprimand them?
In any case, if telling were indeed restricted to
animate beings, surely stating (your suggested
replacement) would be similarly restricted?
