There was a prior enhancement request that I eventually discovered, https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48459, which proposes a different type of solution than the one I proposed (I duped them anyway) but it also included an instance specific way to accomplish the in-line header that is less involved than the macro. Unfortunately, as I note, it is instance specific, so one would have to create the indexing or change the indexing for each specific heading (as opposed to just applying a Character Format that is targeted by the ToC generator as I have argued. Suffice it to say that it is not a work around I want to teach to secondary students....
