No problem with Xubuntu 16.04. I use Xubuntu 16.04. I can open freely and well spreadsheet in Calc without problems (I just installed an extension to read financial market data from yahoo and this slows down, but doesn't freezes the software - maybe some elements or forms or macro can have that effect).
