I'm not sure anyone can help without knowing which menu items you are
having problems with. But here's an idea. Once you have opened a menu
using Alt+character, you are in a different mode and, although
Alt+character usually works to select individual menu items, you need
use only the plain character. For example, Save in the File menu can
be reached by Alt+F, Alt+S - but more easily by Alt+F, S.
Once you have reached the relevant menu (using Alt), does pressing
plain D twice achieve what you need?
