For what it's worth, I just tried a Calc spreadsheet on the following OSs: Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon running from a live USB session with LO 5.1.2.x
Puppy Linux (Tahr) running from a live USB session with LO 5.1.2.x Neither exhibited the same slowness issue that I have with running Ubuntu Mate. I'm beginning to think my problem isn't with LO as much as it is with Ubuntu Mate.
