Hallo Robert, this seems to work, but somewhat counter-intuitively, in the sense that the selected objects appear to become grouped, prior to aligning them. In other words, It becomes impossible to identify which objects have been selected for alignment.
But thanks for the tip. It kinda helps to make progress at last!
