The detail is important: word1[space][one (or two) hyphen (minus)][space]word2[space] ...the (double) hyphen (minus) is converted into en-dash, whereas: word1[double hyphen (minus)]word2[space] ...the double hyphen (minus) is converted into em-dash. Note the difference of space characters. Using the colon characters, the replacement is performed precisely as desired, whether there are space characters adjacent to the words or not.
