Kelly - I have at least one LibreOffice presentation with as many as 76 slides in it, and I've never had a problem with it. I use it under MS Windows.

I do the same and my sets sometimes exceed multiple hundreds of slides [1], without showing any sign of locking/crashing. So, the number of slides itself is probably not the issue here [2].
