You can use the "-cwd" option to qsub/qrsh. This will make job run in same directory from which the job was submitted. Thus, if you are in ~/project/foo and use 'qsub -cwd', the job will try to chdir() to ~/project/foo on the compute node before starting (and throw an error if this chdir() fails).
