I need to carry state with a host. Specifically I need to know how long the
host has been idle. Is there a way to get this info from gridengine?

I am wrong of course. Load sensor does run continuously. Will look
into that as well.

One other thing to consider is that I believe you can run a load on one
host that reports a value for a *different* host. You could, in theory,
have something running on the qmaster (or elsewhere) to report on the
nodes. This could be useful for tracking how long a host is off (via
periodic pings), or watching accounting logs to try and find "idle"
time.
