I used to run the installer on execd nodes, but now I don't bother. The installer (6.2U4) insists that the hostname of the local machine must be in /etc/hosts, but I have found that this is not necessary as long as forward and reverse DNS are correct for the host.
I now have a script that creates the local spool directory, copes the init script, runs chkconfig on it to ensure it starts on boot-up and then adds "nis" to the "services" line in /etc/nsswitch.conf. As far as I can tell, this is all that is needed for an execd host.
