a) You can define a second queue solely for the use of short jobs. Then setting up slotwise subordination related to the normal queue. `man queue_conf` section "subordinate_list", hence one of the array instances will be suspended for the duration of one of the short running jobs. b) Another option is to have a second queue solely for the short jobs, but instead of using a subordinate list the two queues have different nice levels defined. 0 for the queue of the short running jobs ,19 for the normal jobs (setting "priority" in the queue definition). As long as you don't oversubscribe a node (i.e. more running processes than cores), giving all processes a nice value of 19 is the same as giving them all 0. Hence in normal day operation you won't notice this setting. Only if a short running job comes in, the processes with a nice value of 19 will give some computing time to other jobs with a lower nice value. The effect compared to a) is, that none of the normal jobs is really suspened, but all jobs on a node will just run a little but slower for some time in the normal queue.
