I assume it's the Debian-supplied init script.

I strongly recommend not using the current Debian packages.  The current
SGE release (see the recent announcement) has support to build dpkg from
the source.  Install the built packages and then run the inst_sge script
as normal.

You'll be lucky if RPMs work on a Debian system.
