Can't you just install the new one, make it one of the shadow masters, and call a migrate? I've never done this across OSs (all my qmasters are Linux hosts), but I quite often migrate the service between those (while the cluster is live) - seems to work really well.

Hi there,

we're looking to swap the NetBSD machine that hosts our qmaster for
an Arch Linux one.

I am sure we can just shut down the NeBSD qmaster, bring up the new
machine with the name and IP and start the ArchLinux qmaster but
can we just sync the qmaster's state across the two machines, or will
the OS switch chuck a spanner in the works?

I can't see why but am open to info.

My searches for move and migrate so far have thrown up possible solutions
however there seem to be shadow masers involved and we don't have that
set-up and we're not really migrating, just pulling the rug from underneath
everything and putting a new rug back.

We're running 8.1.6 and have

spooling_method classic
spooling_lib libspoolc
