Hi Ashley, we (Univa) are working on a web services interface on top of GDI. This would be a much easier integration point for a Python interface (if it is really Python you need).
We've been looking at a Python wrapper on top of GDI ourselves and while doable it still is quite a bit of work. The web services interface isn't less work but we're doing it for multiple reasons and then wrapping Python around that is straight forward. Let me know whether you're interested.
