creating _anything_ on a host without a graphical interface sort of defeats the purpose of using a platform that has "visually designed" in its tagline. that said, the current server implementation can be flexible, but that requires quite a bit of work. we probably wouldn't repeat most of the design choices that were made for the current hop server, but here we are...
