I'm really intrigued as to why you have this limitation. Any cheap starter PC these days comes with 512 MB memory as a minimum. That's plenty for apache - you'll be bandwidth or cpu limited before you run out of memory. Assuming you have a compelling reason to squash apache, do you understand *why* it occupies the memory footprint that it does? Compilation converts the source code into machine code and this occupies memory, that's how programs work. Depending on the amount of code included in your compilation, there will be an irreducible amount of machine code produced. You can't dictate a priori how much memory you want a binary to occupy, rather, it is a consequence of the functionality of the binary. You can't pour a quart into a pint pot, or whatever...
