nginx is reverse proxying to 127.0.0.1:8080

Since nginx is doing SSL, does Apache have to be running SSL as well?

Yep!

Before I tried this Squirrelmail was running fine with the Apache
setup. Now I'm having some problems with page loads and the nginx
error log is tossing up bad certificate alerts.

Maybe you use a *self-signed* certificate?

2Q:

1.) Howabout to ask this in the nginx list[1]?
2.) Howabout to use nginx for Squirrelmail[2]?

In the wiki http://wiki.codemongers.com/ are also some examples how do
you can setup some apps with nginx ;-)
