Hi all, I've found the answer, and it's a fairly good one: mod_firehose
Before finding mod_firehose, I was modifying mod_dumpio to generate a separate log file without the extraneous diagnostic bits. Google revealed mod_firehose, which also started as a modification of mod_dumpio, but has been refined for over a year at the BBC. It's now part of apache_2.4, but it works without modification in 2.2.
