Not always that simple. A lot of smart people have trouble getting hired.

As for the break-in attempt, there are enough common passwords that to thoroughly exhaust brute force can take quite a few.

If the system isn't configured to block you after a few dozen then may as well keep trying until your dictionary of common passwords is exhausted.
