ok, it's a known issue with java 6 on *nix platforms, see
http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/JCR-912

it's fixed in trunk and will be released with the imminent 1.3.1 release.

I was able to "fix" this problem by completely removing repository folder and 
restarting the app.
