thanks for the quick answer. "Unfortunately" I cannot reproduce my problem as a test-method of XATest. So, it's either a problem with JCA or, which is most probable in most of the cases, it's just me doing something terribly wrong.

The code is in jackrabbit-core, look for SharedItemStateManager [1]
and related classes.

You may also want to take a look at the XATest class [2] for test
cases related to transactions. Can you reproduce your problem in a
test like that?
