The other thing to realise is export is only valid for the current
terminal window

So if you do an export it only applies to the current terminal window, as
soon as you close that window or open a different terminal window those
settings are gone.

If you want them to be available in all terminal windows you need to add
those settings to your profile file which should be ~/.bash_profile on OS X
