I eventually made a number of changes to smsc_at.c to get this working.
I changed :-
+ speed from 19200 to 115200
+ some of the line parameters (eg. parity)
+ added a sleep after the AT+CMGS
While I cannot guarantee which if any of these changes fixed it, but the
default nokiaphone settings certainly didn't work for me.
Hopefully somebody has a more deterministic contribution.

Is is possible to use a Nokia 6210 as SMSC?
If yes, should i use mgetty? The Phone is connected on 'com1'!
If it is possible, could you mail me a smskannel.conf file?
I work hard to send a sms from my computer over the 6210 to an
other Phone. Please give me a kickstart.
