A direct connection with the GSM network. an SMSC is an interface between known (or
propriety) communication protocols and the GSM (or other type of) network, while
Kannel - which is an SMS (or WAP) gateway) is an interface bettween said known
communication protocols and applications. this setup is what known in the hype as
"multi-tiered", in which you have several layers, each does what it do best and leaves
the rest of the work for other specialized components. we like it that way as it makes
creating and maintained very large systems possible by spliting them to smaller,
managable, sections.

In several situations this distinction between an SMSC and an SMS gateway is not that
prevalent, in which case Kannel can be viewed as a common interface wrapper around
different interfaces and protocols, and its use is required if you don't want your
application to have to learn to speak with all kinds of weird protocols, making it so
much more complicated.
