I think i should clarify point 1

what i want to be able to do is recieve a text message (via the plugged
in phone) and then some software that i will develop myself will pick
this message up via the API, and then will do whatever it deems
necessary depending upon the content of the message, and then will send
a reply to the originator of the text by pushing it back through the API
onto the phone and away.

if that makes sense ^^ :)

Kannel can do 2,3,4 and has 5. About 1, am not sure about the aspect
of
the system itself doing the responding.
