I use a nokia and an Ericsson  handset, i bought one of these USB phone
chargers and leave it connected full time with no Battery, Just remember if
your power down the machine you need to swich the phone on quite quickly.

did a month or two ago?  I doubt it.  The main problem with using a real
mobile phone as though it were a GSM modem is the fact that you're
running off battery power.  Leaving a phone on 24x7 plugged into the
wall socket will ruin the battery, certainly.  For testing purposes, or
in the interim you should be okay, but don't do this for extended
periods of time unless you can afford to switch handsets and batteries
every so often.
