you should read the documentation of the compiling bit...

if you add:
 --enable-start-stop-daemon
to the compile you should be ok... so that's:

./configure  --enable-start-stop-daemon
make
make install

yes myself I've been looking for the rpm of kannel... there should be one as
the user guide sort of uses it, however I figured that must have been some
kind of mistake or so...
The best thing to do is what you're already doing
