ok, from my understanding, it is possible to download a linked image, ringtone, game from a .wml page, through a gateway, to a phone.

I am running kannel (bearerbox/wapbox) with the standard configs.

I setup a small .wml page with a bunch of images linked from it (.gif .jpg png (and an ugly back and white) .wbmp )

After starting kannel and pointing my phone to the gateway and to the web-page, the page loads fine, i see a list of the files as expected.

I click on the link and i see it loading on the phone and hex data in the kannel log. After a few seconds, the phone says invalid data, and the log says "content-type <image/png> not supported" or image/jpg whatever, depending on the image type.

I KNOW this phone supports atleast .gif (it came w/ some gif files on it) I'm pretty sure it would support jpeg too it's a Motorola T730.

I'm really confused here, i must be overlooking something simple? Or is there something missing from kannel that commercial wap gateways (like verizon's) have that allow this?

Would mms be a better way to go about this? Also, i don't really understand how kannel handles mms and sms, do i need a gsm modem on the server? or does it contact the phone some other way? and, will it avoid the costs of verizons sms/mms fees?

Thanks in advance for any info.
