Is there a strictly TCP/IP based SMS Center solution available?
I am investigating Kannel and I'm not quite getting why I need a modem at all to get my SMS messages out. Surely there is a TCP/IP based approach to this.
No, you don't need a modem to send out SMSs with Kannel. The option to use modem is there so you CAN do it if you need to. Direct connections to operators' SMSCs are not usually the cheapest way to send messages if you don't have that much traffic.
In any case, Kannel knows how to handle several (six, maybe more, don't remember. Check user guide at http://www.kannel.org) different interface protocols to different SMSCs.
