GSM modems. They're just like ordinary modems in that they plug into a
standard serial port for the most part, except that instead of plugging
into a POTS line you stick a SIM card into them as you would any GSM
mobile. I've tested a number of these GSM modems with Kannel, such as
the Nokia 30, which Froogle gives me a link to an Australian site:

Seems to cost something like AU$618.45. Roughly the price of a
medium-to-high end GSM handset, I think. I've also tried a few Wavecom
GSM modems, and they seem to work pretty well with Kannel too.

On a side note, I wonder if it would be possible to work out a landline
SMSC system using Kannel, a plain modem, and a POTS line?

But then you'll have to make the IR or Bluetooth look like a serial
device to Kannel. Personally, I haven't tried it, but I imagine doing
it over IR shouldn't be much more difficult than standard RS-232,
provided your irda support is up to spec, and your phone knows enough to
do so. As for Bluetooth, I honestly have no idea. Frankly, I'd rather
just shell out a few bucks for a data cable that plugs into the plain
old serial port. No sense in further complicating matters if they can
be made simpler with only a small effort.
