there is no reply to the CNMI ?? I think.
possibly modem never sees the CNMI and this is the problem?
actually kannel already does AT+CSMS=1 before
so just set init string with the CNMI:
init-string = "AT+CNMI=1,2,0,1,1"

see if that makes a difference


you could talk to your modem with minicom and see what it replies to AT+CNMI=?
and AT+CNMI=1,2,0,1,1
