I guess, its the way MNO (Mobile
Network Operators) model their revenue generation. First, because
provision of an email to SMS is no big deal for any MNO. What they need
is just another Kannel-style gateway which can convert SMTP/MIME to
UCP/CIMD2/SMPP etc as Kannel does for a HTTP POST/GET.
The problem with MNO is to generate revenue if they allow users to use
free email to SMS. MNO do not normally charge a terminating SM. And
email originator of SM cannot be tracked unless it is piped through a
application service provider.
IMO, some MNO do provide free email to SMS purely for competitive
marketing reasons.

Is it that not all network providers offer email to SMS? Is this
why the SMSC route is preferred (per credit use)? I mean why would
application service providers make people pay for credits to send
application to SMS messages rather than just allow their users to use
email to SMS? Or why would users use an application that charges for
credits, over one that offers email to SMS (which is free in North
America, not sure about Europe)?
