The /etc/init.d/kannel script is *no* mandatory option. It's more related to production servers that need automatic start/stoppping routines while runlevels are initiated, halted.
Kannel's install process will _never_ write to such system directories like the /etc/init.d scripts home, for the sake of security and awareness of things you as a user should know that you are doing.
Simply call bearerbox with parameters and then smsbox with parameters to have both daemons running.
