Aras, I've been able to compile Kannel even on 10.2 using the developer tools. I've never tried with binary releases, but there should be no problems.
Read the documentation that comes with Kannel or browsing the Kannel web site. You should specify the location of the conf file (all boxes can share the same file, but you should specify where the file is located). You can find examples on the source tree, try smskannel.conf, it should get you up and running fast.
