FLYERONE
ANNOUNCES OPEN SOURCE MESSAGING GATEWAY
Tambur Messaging Gateway Available Under
the MPL
HELSINKI, Finland. -
April 18th, 2005 - FlyerOne Ltd
announced today that the source code for its Tambur Messaging Gateway
product -
an advanced SMS/MMS gateway platform - has been made available under
the OSI
(Open Source Initiative) approved Mozilla Public License (MPL). The
company has
established a community Web site at www.tambur.org.
Full source code and binaries for Tambur are available at this site.
Tambur Messaging Gateway is an SMS/MMS messaging gateway platform used
to
integrate into SMSC and MMSC infrastructure provided by network
operators. It
exposes their functionalities through a uniform, easy-to-implement API,
and
provides advanced functionalities for billing, message routing and
system
management. Tambur significantly reduces development time for mobile
services
and is an open, standards based alternative for commercial and in-house
developed gateway products. FlyerOne has used Tambur internally since
2002 in
numerous commercial projects.
"The market for SMS gateway products has become commoditized during the
last years, with a large number of commercial products out on the
market. As
our primary focus does not lie in developing gateway products, we
decided to
contribute back to the open-source community and release a
full-featured,
modern SMS and MMS capable gateway product under a corporate friendly
open-source license", comments Anders
Lindh, CEO of FlyerOne Ltd.
The Tambur Messaging Gateway is developed according to the J2EE
specification,
and is tightly integrated with the open source JBoss Application
Server. Tambur
utilizes a number of J2EE technologies, including Enterprise Java Beans
(EJB)
for business-logic and persistence, the Java Messaging Service (JMS)
for
internal messaging and the Java Management Extensions (JMX) for runtime
management. Tambur also provides a full featured web-based management
user-interface.
Tambur is also being released as a part of the JBoss Open Source
Federation. Bob Bickel, vice president of strategy
and corporate development at JBoss, Inc., said: "FlyerOne's move to
open
source the Tambur SMS/MMS gateway gives mobile network operators a
high-performance, cost-effective option for delivering messaging
applications.
JBoss customers in this market can feel especially comfortable working
with
Tambur because it is tightly integrated with the JBoss Enterprise
Middleware
System."
In addition to the Tambur Messaging Gateway, a Java based MMS
library as
well as a WBXML transformer are made available under the Mozilla Public
License. The goal of the Tambur project is to release a community
created, 1.0
release towards the end of the year. With the release of the Tambur
Messaging
Gateway, FlyerOne has expanded its service offerings to include a full
suite of
related professional services.
