i use serial-usb-adapters and usb-hubs ...
for example:
http://www.alternate.de/html/shop/productDetails.html?artno=RDUA01&
.... each modem get his own "adress": /dev/ttyUSBxx
so you can easy configure them in kannel.conf
questions? feel free to ask ...

thank you for the fast and helpful replies. I try to make a short
summary: The PCI-cards offer "native" serial connections but need a
driver (and therefore might need a recompilation of the kernel) in order
to address the new serial ports correctly. The usage of USB-hubs
together with USB2serial converters use the built-in USB support of the
modern kernels which can make it quite easy to connect several modems.
So I think that I will test the USB solution first. Therefore three last
questions to Gordon:
- Any special requirements/features needed from the USB hub? Or will
this simple one
(http://www.alternate.de/html/shop/productDetails.html?artno=LXZH06&) work?
- Which Distribtuion do you use (or kernel)? I currently prefer Ubuntu
(running 2.6.10). I think that should work...
- Is it correct that "lsusb" will show me the devices after connecting
them to the USB hub? Or is anything else to be done?
Greets,
Lars-Hendrik
