so if you wanted to use kannel to deliver sms messages to your phone like yahoo messenger does

i would need
kannel + what else to do it
do i need to pay the cingular/mobile operators money to do this

i know that we can just send to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
but i m sceptical as to how reliable this mode is

You need cygwin to run Kannel under Windows platform, and not recommended to use it for production use. And yes Kannel is the best Open Source SMS Gateway ever made, thanks to the developers to make it possible :)
