Hello Iain, we use a similar setup to accept requests for sending out alert SMS batches. Caller calls an extension on our pbx from a registered phone and triggers the sending of a couple of SMS to a predefined list. Clients use this predominantly to trigger alert sms by dialup devices.
don't even try to fiddle with modems or direct serial scripting here, use an asterisk server for the call processing like we did. In our case the calls are not even sent in via ISDN cards, but via SIP directly from the phone company, although ISDN would work as well.
