Kannel has built-in modest security measures (IP-based access/deny and user/password protection) but that's usually not enough, specially if you don't trust the "network surroundings".
Many people (myself included) are using VPN's between Kannel and SMSC's to overcome such scenarios. Firewalls are also recommended to reduce the risk of intrusion. You can use most of the regular security measures available to improve security and privacy of your data.
