Can you verify that the bearerbox you try to run is the actual CVS-Version and not some release lying somehwere in the path? if in indeed IS the cvs version, please compare your setup to the one detailed in http://www.kannel.org/download/kannel-userguide-snapshot/userguide.html#AEN2238 For generic, you need to supply additional parameters to define how the gateway actually works.
