So the first part of this I am to understand is that no one can really do
this on their own, if you want to reach cell phones of a commercial network,
you need to use a provider which can talk with that network, right? In other
words, you can't be the provider unless you want to get into the phone
business.

>>> yes this is correct, we are not capable of interconnecting SMSC's they
have their own service level agreements and routing policies . that we cant
handle as an individual.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------

The second thing is, which is more advantageous? Using a GSM modem or SMPP
provider?
Or perhaps a combination of both to do least cost routing?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------
>>> SMPP throughput is higher than a normal GSM modem. its faster we dont
need to monitor our Modem connectivity issues and hardware failures.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

If using GSM modem, I would guess that I would need as many modems as I feel
there would be simultaneous users, is this correct?
------------------------------------------
<< this will give a good throughput that depends on ur customerbase. but iam
not very sure about how we assign one MSISDN (mobile no) to the modem pool .
that i dont know. but u can research on this.
------------------------------------------------------------------
If using SMPP, it's just over TCP/IP so nothing special, just access to the
Internet. Also, if SMPP is peer-to-peer, does this mean you are relying on
peers being in the areas that you think you will be communicating with? If
so, then a GSM provider is wider coverage range?

Our responsibility ends after the SMPP gateway connection. after that
routing to peer smsc's and other GSM network is the SMPP providers
responsibility. we need to configure our kannel gateway with smpp providers
username,password,and other parameters.

I don't know how many users we might have, we have some 2000+ customers but
we don't know how many will want to use these SMS services yet.

>Are u referring to Fixed line sms's ? iam not very sure about kannel. but
>Asterisks suppport fixed line sms's

I'm not sure, this is all new to me. I've started reading about SMS
yesterday. I know that trixbox has SMS capability but so far, people seem to
say avoid it, it's too rudimentary.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
yes. trixbox is bulit on asterisk VOIP gateway. But there are some issues.
