Sean, Please find my answers bellow (these is a personal opinion based on my experience):
1- How many texts per month can I actually send (I need to do about 10,000 at full production)? Well beyond than that. I use Kannel in a production environment for a massive SMS service handling 500,000 - 2,000,000 messages per month. I think 10,000 messages is an easy number for Kannel to handle if it is correctly configured. 2- Would I better off going with going with an enterprise solution where I buy credits per text? Depends on what you want to accomplish. Companies such as Clickatell ( www.clickatell.com) offer very good applications which do not require you to have your own gateway like Kannel. If you need something specific that requires to do complex tasks such as CRM or two-way messaging, then you should look at Kannel and develop your own solution. 3- Reasonably, how much hardware do I actually need if Kannel is the way I go? To send 10,000 messages a month using SMPP or HTTP, you can use a small configuration from Amazon EC2 (aws.amazon.com). A USD 2,000 physical server will do too (Xeon processor, 1 GB memory, etc.). I recommend you use some kind of managed services like Amazon EC2 because if you need to increase your capacity at some point in the future you will be able to do it without buying new hardware.
