Hey!
I tried using "AT+CMGS" as init-string but the modem does not start, I
would really appreciate some help please.

Works fine with AT+CMGS
dont use CMGW.
It does not write to the phone memory
and also does not read incomin messages.
you will have to set the intialization command
AT in modems.conf file
