I've had the best luck with a w810i. I can receive 1 message every two seconds, and send one message every 4 seconds. Benchmarks were done on a mac mini running 1.4.1 on kannel stable, via the USB data cable that comes with the phone. 10.5 was the OS, here is the config I'm using.

I tried several other modems via serial ports, and had various issues with almost all of them. It seemed counter intuitive to me to actually use a handset, but in the end it proved to be the best working solution short of a direct connection to an SMC
