Hi,
An excellent modem with long kannel track record is the Wavecom fasttrack.
However, not to throw your money away on your (Zadacom)? modem try the
technical support from your store beforehand.
SIM brand is irrelevant.

Hi all,
Thanks for the tips,
I did install Sierra drivers, and still get absolutely nothing on the modem.
As Alvaro noticed, the keep alive string : AT+CBC;+CSQ gets an empty
string result. So I am assuming the modem has some problem.
I am thinking about getting a new one, so I'd like your inputs on the
matter. Maybe some modems are buggy, or not well supported by kannel.
What modem would you recommend me to use, going to use an AT&T SIM with
that ??

Hi,
Sierra Wireless make their own Linux drivers. Go to their site and
download them. You might also get their AT reference manual while at it.

I tried with %2B, without, with a local number (without %2B1) and the
the same results.
I saw some people using
init-string = AT+CGDCONT=2,"IP","ISP.CINGULAR"
you told me to use
init-string = AT+CNMI=2,1,2,0,0;AT+CMEE=1
Is there a way somehow to combine both strings since you said CMEE is
the modem error verbosity.
Since the modem works on XP, I assumed it "could" also work with a linux
setup
Would using another modem possibly solve this issue ? and what is the
most well know modem I could use for that ?

the destination number is in international format?? I see 16xx9x0xx30
if so, in the sendsms call you must add the plus sign before the
number ....&to=+16xx9x0xx30&.... you must urlencode the plus sign
(it is %2B)
Kannel might be sending your number as a local number

Hi Eric
Something seems wrong with the modem. in return to > AT+CSQ^M you
should receive something like

2009-04-16 09:21:51 [21755] [8] DEBUG: AT2[telcel2]: <-- +CSQ: 24,99
that shows modem signal quality and BERR
Also, your log does not show any sms transaction. Can you capture a
sms transaction log?
Algo from smsbox & bearerbox

Hello Alvaro,
The modem seems to accept the config modifications and starts up
correctly.
The SIM card I use can send SMS, that's my usual phone SIM card. I
tested the modem under windows XP, and could send SMS.
Although everything seems to be working here, no SMS is actually sent
out, and the other phone just doesn't get anything.
sierra.log file attached,
Thank you a lot for your help !

Hello Eric
Try this:

id = sierra

detect-string = "Sierra Wireless, Inc."
need-sleep = true
init-string = AT+CNMI=2,1,2,0,0;AT+CMEE=2

keepalive-cmd = AT+CBC;+CSQ
reset-string = AT+CFUN=1
group = smsc

smsc-id = sierra
modemtype = auto

modemtype = auto
allowed-smsc-id = sierra
sim-buffering = false
keepalive = 60
max-error-count = 5
log-file = "/var/log/kannel/sierra.log"
All logs from the modem will be logged separatly in the
sierra.log log.
If modem complain about CMEE=2 try CMEE=1. This enables modem
error verbose
Post logs
Also check that the sim you are using has credit and is allowed to
send sms. Put it in a regular phone and test sending messages.
Hope Helps

I am merely trying to learn and hopefully get it working :-)
How do you see I send sms using GPRS command ? Is there another
