Also I didn't have good experience with usb modems either.
If you have several modems, if you disconnect one and reinsert... it
will not necesarili get the same id as before.... sou you might have
routing problems... there is a workarround.. but too complicated.
Also depending on the firmware and your OS, you might have problems
recognizing them by the OS.
I didn't test ethernet modems but serial modems connected through a
serial console/terminal server. They work excellent
