Claudio,

Use the latest CVS snapshot, it's considered as stable as 1.4.3 and it has
the meta-data functionality.

That document is mostly valid (at least for meta-data) it's only lacking the
per-smsc setting, which was added later.

Anyway, you can always download the latest snapshot's userguide from here:
